Fall Leaf Cleanup Tips for Freeport & Northwest Illinois

One week the maples are turning, the next your whole yard is buried. Here's how we tell our neighbors to handle it — whether you do it yourself or call us to knock it out in an afternoon.

When should you start raking?

Don't wait for every last leaf to drop. In our area the heaviest fall is usually mid-October through early November, and it's far easier to stay ahead of it than to dig out from a foot of wet, matted leaves after the first rain or snow. A good rule of thumb: once your lawn is roughly a third covered, it's time for a pass. Two or three smaller cleanups beat one back-breaking marathon every time.

Why leaving them on the lawn hurts your grass

A thick leaf layer blocks sunlight and traps moisture against your turf. Left through winter, that mat smothers the grass, invites snow mold and lawn disease, and gives mice and other pests a cozy place to nest. By spring you can end up with bare, patchy spots that cost far more to reseed than a cleanup would have cost. Clearing leaves before the snow flies is one of the cheapest things you can do for a healthy lawn next year.

Do this before the snow flies

• Clear the lawn and beds so grass and perennials can breathe over winter.
• Cut the grass a touch shorter on your final mow — long grass mats down and molds under snow.
• Clean your gutters once the trees are mostly bare (more on that below).
• Haul off the debris rather than piling it at the edge of the yard, where it just blows back.

Don't forget the gutters

Clogged, leaf-packed gutters are a quiet cause of expensive winter damage. When water can't drain, it backs up, freezes, and forms ice dams that push under shingles and into walls. Once the leaves have mostly fallen, clear the gutters and downspouts so meltwater has somewhere to go. If climbing a ladder in cold weather isn't your idea of a good time, this is something we handle as part of a cleanup.

What should you do with all the leaves?

You've got a few options. Shredding a light layer with a mulching mower returns nutrients to the lawn and is fine in small amounts. A backyard compost pile is great for the garden. But for the volume most yards produce, the simplest answer is hauling them off entirely — no bags lining the curb, no piles to deal with. When we do a cleanup, we take the leaves and debris with us so you're left with a clean yard and nothing to drag to the road.

DIY or call a pro?

Plenty of folks handle a small, flat yard themselves, and that's great. It usually makes sense to call a crew when you've got mature trees and a lot of volume, a big or sloped property, gutters that need doing, a tight weekend, or you'd simply rather not spend your Saturday on it.
